Goggin had said some very complimentary things about my work in New England which made me feel good.

There is an Elfun Meeting tonight and Shreve and Andrews are here today. "Whitey" had a meeting this morning so Shreve could say a few words to the whole gang. As usual he gave a good, vigorous talk, expressing optimism for the future of the Transportation Dept - hope he's right. Whitey called on Andy to give a talk but H.L merely stood at his chair in the back of the room and said a few words that meant nothing except perhaps one might read a note of self defense in them or maybe that was purely imagination - I don't know. Speculation is still rife as to whether Andy was promoted or demoted and only time will tell.

Republic Steel bought a 65 ton Plymouth for their Canton plant and it looks like a torque converter job. We have got to do something about Plymouth and I notice Shapter is beginning to get into this picture more. Believe he will have charge of all industrial loco. activities when the smoke clears away.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Saturday, July 29,'39
Left home at 8:45 AM and about North East we hit rain of cloudburst proportions, which we continued to encounter together with thunder and lightning in close proximity, all the way to Buffalo. We had to drive 30 to 35 MPH with headlights on all that distance and I saw our hopes of reaching Saratoga, our objective, dwindle as we plowed on over flooded roads and near blinding rain. The land was flooded on all sides, fields washed out, vineyards afloat.
