The farmers have been praying for rain and they certainly got it - too much of it this time.

When we left the lake near Buffalo it soon cleared and we picked up time, winding up for lunch at the Pan Tree Inn at Canandaigua about 1:30 PM. From 2:30 until 7:00 PM we drove steadily over U.S.20 to Richfield Springs, up to Fort Plain and across the Mohawk, down to Fonda and on up to Johnstown, where we had dinner in a little place like Pulakos after rejecting the hotel at $1.00 to $1.25 per person and we had good sandwiches and chocolate milks which were just as good and cost $1.30 total, thereby saving about $3.00 and being better off for not eating a huge dinner which we didn't need. (Lesson #1 in how to travel economically) We then decided to stop at the most likely looking Cabin Camp or Tourist Home we could find, and hopped off toward Saratoga. Within 3 miles of Saratoga we spotted a big well kept looking farmhouse with a tourist sign and a Fire Warden's shingle on it, and that's where we stayed for $3.50 instead of about $10.00 at a hotel. We had good clean beds, it was quiet, and it was more interesting. (Lesson #2) And we clicked off 385 miles, storm and all, and were in bed at 9:30 PM after a very satisfactory day of travel.

Near Fort Plain we remarked this was the scene of many an Indian battle as described in "Drums Along the Mohawk" and Bab became greatly agitated (or pretended to be) lest we be the object of Indian ambush. But we managed to get through OK.
