Shanty Shane
Sunday, July 30, 1939.
Leaving Saratoga after breakfast about 8:30 we made fine time and arrived at the Shane about 11:30 AM Std. Time on which Shane operates. So we were all unpacked and ready to start vacation in earnest at dinner time. We have Cottage #11 over the hump west of the Big Shanty and commanding a slight view of the lake - a very satisfactory set-up with two bedrooms this time - more compact and exactly what we wanted. The Tafts and Bowers are here and the Atwells coming tomorrow. Bob Simon here with a bride, Mrs. Noyes and daughter Eleanor here and Mrs. Melcher. Otherwise, the people are new to us. But Tafts and Bowers make it 100%. Also, the waitresses, Mary, Jean and Becky are on deck in our dining room and Mary Jane in the other. Also Alta, the head waitress, reputedly very unpopular with the other girls. The Clendenins and Mrs. Graves and [[underlined]]Mr.[[/underlined]] Graves this time too. So all in all, things look very salubrious for a fine vacation and we are tickled to death.

Mr. Taft and I got going on horseshoes early after dinner and of course, we all went swimming this afternoon. The beach is improved by 68 loads of sand they brought over on the ice this winter and dumped over the rocks, making a nice sandy beach for the children right at the grown-ups place, a big improvement. Bab gave us a thrill when swimming in from the float - yelled, "Daddy. I can't make it!" I was near her but didn't hear her at first. Finally when I did, I gave her a hand and got her on her back after which she was okay and came in without help. She had got a mouthful when she left the float and it had choked her up a little.
