I wanted the family to see the Barre granite quarries so this morning we drove to Barre, only 36 miles, and they had their breaths taken away by the Wells Lawson 260 ft. hole in the top of Barre hill and I got the movies I failed to get when I was there before. Then we drove over to Montpelier so Bab could see the capitol of Vermont, which failed to impress her very much, however. But the quarry impressed even Bab and I think it was a worthwhile trip. We had the top down and before we got back, the blazing sun had got us all feeling a little woozy. This afternoon, I put the top up again as another storm was threatening.

It broke just as the picnic at the old swimming hole was getting under way and we came home. Willie had developed a violent headache, probably from the sun this morning and lay down for an hour with aspirin, which finally knocked it out much to the relief of us all.

This evening, Willie being well recovered, we went over to Post Mills to a Square Dance, the Tafts taking us. We had them, Dr. Atwell and Collis Bowers over prior to have a drink. Mrs. Atwell had to stay with Jean Carol (cuter than ever) and Mrs. Bowers had a headache. The dance was a scream, being presided over by the Sheriff, Mr. Hill, who guaranteed he could teach us the Soldier's Joy in ten minutes. One country girl looked like James Thurber's women, in an old, grease stained silk dress. As always at these affairs, we got a terrific kick out of the whole affair, being content to merely sit and watch. Mrs. Taft was propositioned
