Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1939.
Putnam sent a wire at the last minute he couldn't be in Boston today to keep his date with us so about 11AM we started on our motor junket, heading for Worcester.  We stopped there to contact Mr. Fish of the American Steel & Wire but Mr. Fish would condescend only to tell Neal over the phone he couldn't do a thing until authorized by Cleveland.  So that was somewhat floppy and we had only the satisfaction of knowing we had forced him to keep us in mind.

About 4 PM we arrived in Springfield where we visited the office, chatting with McKenney and Rogers, the manager.  Decided to contact Ludlow in the morning as it was pretty late.  McKenney and Rogers said they understood Ludlow had gone to trucks and the loco was out.

We put up at the Kimball, had a couple of ales, dinner at the Highland House, famed for its food, saw "Golden Boy" and Jack Holt in "Trapped in the Sky" (!!), another ale at the Kimball and to bed feeling the day had been none too profitable.

Covered a lot of ground today, Visited Ludlow early, and Hodgson told us in effect to be patient - they would buy a locomotive eventually but not for several months at least.  We then slid over to Gilbert & Barker at West Springfield and looked over their track, but saw no one.  Neal has the dope but wanted me to see the layout.  From there we headed to Readsboro Vt.  via the Mohawk Trail and North Adams, having lunch at the tavern at The Hairpin Turn near North Adams.  We sat on an open porch overlooking the valley and the
