Even this morning, I still felt the effects of our session night before last, although as the day wore on, I felt progressively better. It was good to see the family and find them well and happy. Even Mother seemed to be in better spirits and I am very happy to note that she and Willie are getting along much better. Willie seems to be trying hard to help out – had her over at Ben and Tony's the other night, etc. So that is a great help in relieving me of the usual nervous tension I'm under when things are not going smoothly that way.

It was the hottest day of the year today – 92° I believe – and I took the children to the beach this afternoon for a dip. But the water seems to be cooling and it was rather chill, especially as the sun went under about the time we got there.

This evening Willie and I went to the Book Club 10th Anniversary celebration at the Bartlett at Cambridge Springs, taking Mrs. Bill with us, as Earl is now in Brazil. We all had a good time – good dinner, good companionship with Barbara, Charlie, Marion, Dick, Walt, Ros, Maybelle, Walt etc. So, with war raging abroad, we still go on with our regular lives and they aren't so bad. The stock market is enjoying a war boom and business is picking up. The Poles are about on the run, with a third of Poland overrun by Hitler's army. The French are pushing earnestly but carefully at the Westwall. So it goes.
