Saturday, Sept. 30, 1939
Today was rainy but not too cold or windy, so tolerable. I shopped in the rain this morning and this afternoon began the job of whitewashing the "recreation room" in the cellar in line with our program of fixing up a decent place there to play ping pong and sit around in very informal style to drink, kid, chat, shoot the bull, etc. I think we'll have something when we get through.

This evening we had invited the Harrises over for cards and then it developed into a small party.  Maybelle called up and wanted us to do something so Willie invited them over and then Bobbie and Guy Bellows to make a second table. We played bridge and then during refreshments I played some Gigli-de Luca duets for Walt Harris, who, besides me, I think was the only one present who [[underlined]] really [[/underlined]] enjoyed them. But it was a swell evening and Walt Scarborough seemed more like himself again. I think he's relieved to be rid of that crazy brother John who is now back in Texas and I believe back in the brokerage business, I think he gave up the idea of studying dentistry.

Finished my whitewash job and rigged up some lamps down cellar.  Now Willie can get up some curtains to screen the area off from the working part of the cellar and we'll have a very cozy little place down there where we can have a lot of fun.
