set of photographs of Hindu statuary showing "138 different ways of doing it" arranged around the outside of the very ornate religious temple. Clark said sex was a religion with these people and is one explanation of the enormous population of India. Clark talk so matter-of-fact about the whole thing, it was not lewd or repulsive but actually educational and interesting. Later on he talked about wandering about the streets of a big South American city, looking in the windows of the lovely homes that scenes of beauty and refinement – one place, magnificent, rich, where an old man every night sat alone playing a graceful grand piano. And I was glad that these latter stories appealed to me more than the former.

Erie, Pa.
Friday, November 17,'39.
Announcement of the day – Messrs. Young and Swope retired from active duty on Dec. 31st. Successors – Philip D. Reed and C. E. Wilson per the reported lineup. So my own deductions about H. L. A. were correct. He was not put in Bridgeport to train for the Presidency. To Messrs. Reed and Wilson, my heartfelt best wishes. From the Sch'dy. meeting in June, I like both of them. To me Reed is 1 in a 1,000,000. He is the kind that inspires in me the desire to be like him. Few men have ever impressed me so powerfully. It even helps sometimes for me to say to myself, "Act as Phil Reed would," or "How would Phil Reed act in a case like this?" I hope someday I can meet and know him. I know it would be a tremendous inspiration! He's 40. He received the new appointment on his birthday!
