with her is to do what I think she wants and not what she says she wants.

Bill Hamilton was here today with his cohorts. We told him about the 6th order torsional critical and to my surprise, he didn't seem angry or flabbergasted whatever - began suggesting control schemes for dodging it and we wound up with hope for a solution instead of an impasse. MacDonald in New York apparently had done nothing about the situation after Jay informed him of it on Friday, so we had to take the bull by the horns and do something ourselves.

Walter Hedley phoned Rudy today and was surprised to find I was not in Berwick dickering with Amble on the tank wheel job - said he had discussed it with Whitey in N.Y. last Thursday and Whitey had agreed to get me down there today. Whitey was rather vague about it but disclaimed having made such an agreement. So I don't know what happened. At any rate, Whitey said I should go if I thought best - he put it squarely in my lap - said the government work was a "one man job" and didn't even want Dick Miller to go with me although unquestionably it would involve arguing shop procedure - Whitey said I could handle that too. I had visions of making that God awful trip via Scranton again tonight but phoned Amble and found he was not yet ready to discuss - would be in a few days and would get in touch with me if it appeared there is any chance of our doing business. I was vastly relieved.

Whitey says everything is all set for me to make my Washington arrangements - all okay with Niven, so I am going to arrange a program.
