and I had a bottle of Ballantine's ale at Cunningham's before going to bed. I enjoy having him around. He's cheerful and I think we understand each other pretty well.

I finally composed my thoughts on the Cummins situation and wrote a letter to AJ. Woodward in answer to Banell's epistle to Whitey, expressing my feeling that on the New York Central job we must explore all the possibilities and gave him one which Dick and I worked out this morning. Dick gave me a lot of optimism and I found the pendulum seemingly swinging away from the utter pessimism of yesterday as expressed in Banell's letter. I felt better after writing the letter - it got something off my chest and I felt I had also contributed a little toward getting the problem solved.

Had lunch at the "OK" with Gordon McDonald, Henry Guy, Ross Brachett and Eddie Edwards and find it pleasant to be lunching again with them. Henry is most interesting always; I have a very genuine liking for him and I think he has also for me.

Willie's 37th birthday and Thanksgiving (a la Roosevelt). Half the country is today per Roosevelt decree and half defied him and is having it next Thursday per time honored tradition.
Had a "homey" time of it all day. Willie and I took a walk this afternoon but otherwise we were at home. Had a movie show this evening. The turkey was splendid Willie doing a fine job cooking it.
