guess I was rather quiet riding up to the apartment for I was thinking mostly about her and the tragedy of it all.

At the apartment, the new one Jay and Ruth moved to not long before she died, I felt better. I had never been there before and I couldn't see her everywhere as I would have at the other place. We had a couple of scotchs and then Virginia arrived from work. She is a Walker, the daughter of Jay's brother, and she looks like a Walker. Her profile and Jay's are almost identical. She is built like him too - rather short and well formed. And she is pretty as a picture - blond, maybe 20, jolly, smart. She must be a great help to him in this period of getting himself readjusted. We went over to a German restaurant called Maxl's at White Plains for dinner and we stayed there until about 11:30 PM, talking laughing, dancing, singing and drinking beer (Jay and I only on the beer - she neither drinks nor smokes). It was a nice evening and it seemed so good to sit there with Youth in the form of Virginia - sweet, gay, happy with no disillusions and no worries - untouched and unafraid and clean. I was sorry when we had to go because I had to get back down to Grand Central to catch the 12:25 sleeper to Albany. When we three were together in the Ford we indulged in a lot of close harmony as we drove along, and that was fun. Virginia is a sweet youngster. Jay tells me Jack Weller is interested in her and I can't blame him at all.

I got on the sleeper and was asleep before we were out of the tunnel. Another heavy day ahead tomorrow.
