Had a pleasant session with Clarence Bailey and lunch with him also. He is a very fine chap - cooperative, intelligent, friendly, helpful.

This afternoon Clark and Smith took me over to meet the Navy, which has a big inspection office over in the IGE Bldg. Met Lt. Comm. Murphy, Comm. Hill and Capt. Evans. They have charge of inspecting the 5" gun mounts and will be in Erie much I think. They are expecting a lot of us and I hope we can come through. Capt. Evans is a very jovial individual who knows Schdy Works better than most GE men, having been there on and off for years; but for all his joviality, I imagine he can put the heat on us if, as and when, and will (as he said) if we don't come up to expectations. Comm. Hill is a lanky, pleasant, slightly dissipated looking fellow who, I imagine, is a swell guy and very easy to get acquainted with. I felt more at ease with these two men than any two new G.E. men I have met this week. At 3 PM, Hill says "Well, let's all go out and get some coffee." I was non-plussed. To my surprise they walked us out into the big office where all the files, stenogs, etc. were and over in a corner were two percolators going, cups and saucers, sugar, cream, etc. all set out. Capt. Evans said, "Help yourself," and we sat down at a big table with a lot of girls to whom he introduced me, and we all had fifteen minutes of chatting and coffee drinking. It was a unique set-up to me and a very charming one; it just tickled me clean through and I liked Evans and Hill better than ever. Murphy seems to be the junior officer - we didn't see much of him.
