(I forgot to mention that Walter also emphasized to me what a concession it was for him to come to Berwick at all this week because he was so busy!) Then we went to see Amble and Ensign and they were both like clams; so Walter immediately tells them the whole story he had just told me not to even hint at! Later he tells me not to tell Whitey what he had done. He's the sort you can't work with and be honest. After that, Amble and Ensign loosened up a little but told us frankly they could not and would not tell us what we really wanted without authorization from New York.

Walter left at noon after a couple quick ones at the hotel and I returned to ACF dutifully, talked to Amble further, dated him, Ensign and Stevens for cocktails at 5:30 at the hotel and got all I could which wasn't much. Had dinner with Ensign and his wife, and then he departed for the office, Amble already having left. They work every night - have for months. Stevens had to go home for dinner but met me at the hotel at 9:30 PM and we drove in his new Zephyr to the Stone Manor, a rural tavern in the hills and one of Walter's hangouts. Out there, the barmaid informed us Walter was in last night and had told her he was going to [[underlined]] Buffalo [[/underlined]] today! So that cleared the air of the last vestige of any doubt I had. And I imagine Stevens was somewhat surprised too. Stevens was tired and so was I. The place was rather dead anyhow so we left early and I was in bed at 11:30 and thankful for it. And in my mind I turned over Walter's bare faced lying and wondered how in hell he expects to get away with all this.
