Erie, Pa.,
Monday, Jan. 1, 1940.
The beginning of a new week, a new month, a new year, a new decade! And in my heart, I trust a New Day for me! A day in which, with the full stature of a mature man in mind and body, intelligence, and judgment and understanding. I can stride forth into the future that faces me with confidence and calm and content, with the full faith that I know how to live and am master of my life to carry on that way. Why say much more? This expresses my hope, my conviction--that in the year ahead I [[underlined]] can [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] will [[/underlined]] live at last the game I want so intensely. So hail 1940! May it be all that my hopes and my faith paint it in my mind's eye!

En route to Sch'dy, N.Y.
Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1940.
Ken Wolf was here today and I had quite a time convincing Guillot and Kyoluth we should show him what we have done and bring our troubles before him. But we did and I think it did some good for we got Ken working to help us. Ken broke in on me unexpectedly just before lunch and we had a pleasant lunch together at the Den. as I had to go in town. Among other things, got the Income Tax Power of Attorney blanks that have been bothering Mother so for a week as they always do at this time of year. Have wanted to bring Ken out to the house some evening, but am stymied again because of going to Schdy. tonight. So make arrangements to have Ken here next week Thursday and Friday which will allow us to carry out the plan OK as I'll be back from my Sch'day speaking engagement.

Felt somewhat like an officeboy this afternoon
