Saturday, Jan.20, 1940.
15° above today but dark and windy and rather disagreeable. The children went on a sleigh ride at White Swan Farm given by Jean Wilson and Sally Gouldthorpe and despite the weather, had a grand time. Rog says, "Whitey Wilson said the funniest things." Whitey and Gouldy did the chaperoning, it being too violent for Carol and Doris I guess. I worked all day, spending a lot of time on boning up on the AIEE braking paper literature about which I know none too much and want to avoid being caught too flat footed Wednesday if I can possibly avoid it. We spent a quiet evening at home alone, content to enjoy a cheery fire in the fireplace and take it easy. The fireplace is one feature of the new house we have used and enjoyed in full measure - don't know how we got along without it for so long.
Met St. L. in the bank this morning and he hailed me and wanted to talk British tank parts. He thought Becker was "nuts" when he said Caterpillar could do the transmission for $2500 and St. L. felt we still had a chance of landing the transmissions. Personally I'm coming to feel the transmission is something we ought to steer clear of - loaded with headaches and dynamite.

A day of further preparation for my "speaking tour" next week - boning up on my braking paper. I have some qualms about it - no telling what these air brake gentlemen like Sillcox or McCune are liable to say if these are present. I trust they will not be! However, for all my qualms, probably
