think. One old grouch across the aisle told the steward it was "enough to drive a man NUTS!" Later he told the steward the ham had too much fat on it. He was sore all the way through. I went to bed early and decided this has been indeed a tough week, but one I shan't forget for a long time. And no cold yet!

Erie, Pa.
Saturday, Feb. 17, 1940.

Found Erie piled high with snow but the family well except Bab has an awful bruise on her back where she bumped into something at gym class. The thing looks something like the bruise on Mother's leg last year that put her in the hospital but not as bad as Mother's. It looks like a trip to the doctor tomorrow if it doesn't look much better.

I was glad to find we were to go to the Scarboroughs tonight for more Tripoly with Maybelle and the Reeds. Walter again having to go to N.Y. for a weekend of work -- not quite so glad when I found Postelthwaite there in Walter's place. All wonder naturally if Maybelle is getting chummy again with him after all the trouble it caused last year. Maybelle said Walt was being razzed about having a girl in N.Y. who could see him only on weekends. I thought there appeared to be great possibilities right here in Erie as regards the other end of the axis and couldn't help wondering if the banker might not return to the Scarborough residence after we had all driven away at midnight. If that is starting up again I question if it could again survive the storm it did before without wrecking the lives of some of the participants. It is full of dynamite from many angles and it is too bad it is getting a fresh start even if innocently.
