en route to Boston,
Tuesday, March 5, 1940.

Here I am on my way to Boston but I have to back track to Sch'dy. for a conference on the Brazilian Navy gun mounts Thursday and Friday and then return to Boston. St.L. will be there and he wants me there although Whitey reversed himself and first said he saw no reason for my going as long as St.L. was going anyway. Then St.L. changed Whitey's mind.

Willie had baked a noodle and ham casserole for dinner and dropped it into the sink, breaking the glass dish. So she dug out enough for Bab and Rog, who were bitterly disappointed at the prospect of not having this favorite dish, and we had sandwiches. During dinner Rog thought he had swallowed a piece of glass but we think it was actually a little brittle piece of crust. But that was disturbing even though Willie had been ultra careful to avoid getting any where glass could possibly be.

Augusta, Me.,
Mar. 6, 1940.

Was seated in the diner this morning opposite an elderly lady who was apparently chaperoning the young Chinese girl with her. And I suddenly realized how white men can marry Chinese. She was utterly lovely - I wanted to stare at her but all I had nerve to do was take a hasty look occasionally. She was beautiful and different to look at, dressed smarty, lovely graceful hands, a soft, low voice and her English sounded perfect. To me she was as charming and fascinating to look at as any white girl I've seen in a long time. She talked so low, I could scarcely hear her but I judged she had never been here before. Wished I might know more about her.
