When I got to the office, learned Doc Millan has kidney stones and his absence rather upset our plans so that by the time we got down to the B&M office, Larry Richardson had left for lunch. We took lunch hastily at the Manger with Ernie Bloss and caught Larry after lunch for a talk about the White River Jct. to Berlin job using Alco units.

When I got here this morning I fully intended leaving tonight for Schenectady but I learned Trazan, Jr. starts work in Augusta today and will leave for Woodsville Saturday meaning if I went to Sch'dy. I would miss the whole Maine Central test completely. I thought it sufficiently important to phone Whitey and I did, explaining the situation. He said, "Well, go on then," and that was all I heard. I don't know yet whether he hung up or we were cut off. At any rate, I assumed we were cut off and had the connection reestablished. He told me again to go to Maine but he sounded awfully blunt. The affair rather worried me until I recalled Whitey's own advice not to be a "worry bug" and I was successful in putting the affair out of my mind. However, I can't thank Whitey for being that way - There's no excuse for it. If and when I ever ascend the  managerial throne, I hope I remember never to slap people over the phone. I can remember to this day, H.L. Andrews' harsh, staccato, "Craton, you're wasting your time with Elliott! Go and see Horstman!" That was ten years ago! So much for that!
