we left Boston for Woodsville. The driving was atrocious! It was quite foggy to lay a nice, uncertain foundation for the driving to start with. In addition it was raining and the rain and mild weather of the past few days was causing floods from melting snow. At one spot we drove a quarter mile in water up to the hub caps! Roy drove as far as Meredith, N.H. up near Laconia and then turned it over to me. I drove from there to Woodsville clean through the White Mountains over winding roads in fog, wind, driving rain and flooded roads between about midnight and 2:30 AM. It was treacherous driving. The flooded roads were full of frost holes concealed completely by water so we would smash into these periodically so violently it was a miracle the tires stood it. Sometimes we hit water so hard it would fly up ahead of the car and flash so brilliantly in the headlight beam it looked like lightning. Spurrell was with me in the front seat and Roy was in back with Marion. A bottle of Scotch was passed around but I didn't dare take any - I could only smell its pungent aroma in the darkness and knew Roy was relaxing. He tried to sleep but the pot holes we hit periodically would wake him up and he would hear the wash of the water behind the car and wonder for a moment where he was.

We arrived at the Hotel Wentworth at Woodsville (renamed by us the "Parker House") at 2:35 AM tired but too keyed up to go immediately to bed. So we four congregated in the Goggin room for a nightcap and at 3:30 AM went to bed with a call left for 7:30
