Tuesday, April 2, 1940.

Having called off Phil Hatch's tour to Woodsville yesterday, we had a date for breakfast with him and Jay at the Parker House at 8 AM. Roy and I were on deck at 8 AM but no Jay nor Phil. They showed up at nearly 9 AM - hadn't taken the Owl but a Penna. Terminal job that was late. We had a good breakfast during which Phil confirmed my stories to Roy about the success of the GE724 motor and welded trucks on the New Haven. Furthermore Phil wants a locomotive for less than $35000, which made me feel better after the B&M rejecting Tarzan Jr. We found a police ticket on Roy's car when we emerged from the hotel and even when four cops surrounded the car, Roy was quite non-chalant, much to Phil's amusement. Roy explained later the guy at the City Hall has a brother who works at our office, etc. etc. and Phil was more and more tickled. I could see Roy was making a hit with him. So I encouraged Roy to get off some of his Irish stories including the one about the origin of the wearing of the green - the Irish battling the apes story - and Phil was more and more intrigued. We spent a couple of hours at the Arsenal during which Phil gave Tarzan Jr. a good inspection and reported that while not swept off his feet with admiration, he was nevertheless quite impressed and so was Jay. Phil wants something for local freight anyhow so we knew Tarzan Jr. would not fill his bill.

We adjourned to the office and as Phil wanted to talk to Ernie Bloss, we invited him over to lunch. He and Phil were closeted in the private office alone for a long time, the lord only knows talking about what but we hoped Ernie wasn't throwing
