Today he may well feel he is living on borrowed time at best and why not live the fast, killing way. He works like hell - and when he relaxes, he relaxes hard - and probably doesn't give a damn. His marriage has been a disappointment to him in that there have been no children. And yet he thinks the world of his wife, realizes that after all, she is the salt of the earth. He evidently thinks a lot of this youngster Helen, but I really believe his relation with her is above board. He likes to be with her sometimes when he needs a change, needs to relax and forget the struggle. Someone young, and fresh, and different like that takes the mind from its troubles. It is a strange world.

This afternoon I spent with Ernie Bloss with as much grace as I could muster, and let him take pot shots at our 44 ton, 4 motor specification. He had nothing very serious to bring up. Just a lot of minor an irritating points that I shall get cleared up. We know now pretty well what our obstacles are, and that is important.

For the first time since I arrived here this trip I spent the evening alone - ate at the Smorgasbord near the hotel - can't touch the Weevil or the Stockholm in New York - and spent the evening in my room. I have grown so used to being with the gang in the evening, I was desperately lonely - if I had happened to run into anyone on the street whom I knew, going back from dinner, I should have sighed with relief and been ready for anything to avoid being alone.
