-now he wants me to start shouldering some of the responsibility and help him arrive at a suitable man. He says Jake is no good- a good salesman but no judgment and I agree with him. Whitey intimated he would like me to take the job if he couldn't get some one - just temporarily to get the thing running smoothly - but he didn't press the thing. I believe he mentioned it mainly to get me to think harder. He's shrewd.
  
b.) Whitey called me in later to say he had some "bad news" for me. My heart rank. Then he said, "Starting April 1, you went on $4300 a year." So that was [[underlined]] splendid [[/underlined]] news! We need just about that amount of raise to make the going smooth again. And the raise is about 13% which is substantial. That news alone made me feel like celebrating but couple with the news under (a) above, it made ultra good news. Felt like getting drunk.

c.) Spent most of the day composing a powerful letter to Goggin on the 44 ton, 4 motor job combatting all B & M  objections and unfolding a good story on our design. It was a satisfaction to write it and then I took it downstairs to John Downie to see if he agreed. John got about two pages into it and then went off into one of his inimitable laughs. "Gee", he said, "this is good. The only time we ever find out how good we are down here is when we see a letter from you guys to the customer! When you're down here with us, all we hear is bellyaching! "All present soared!
