Erie, Pa.,
Monday, April 22, 1940.

This was another of those rather red letter days for couple of reasons:

1.) Wayne Lynd, who has charge of the Camp Commercial program for Erie this year, came to me and said he wanted to give me advance notice I was to go to Camp Commercial in July, and maybe Camp Engineering also, and I would have to give a paper at Commercial on "Electrification." This is a distinct honor, as I went to Camp Engineering last year. And moreover, this year it is to be at the Island, and my long desire to go to the Island will be satisfied.

2.) I went in to see Whitey about a New York Central Change Sheet and when we finished that he said, "Where are you going to be this week?" I told him here as far as I knew. "Well," he said, "what kind of an impression would it stir up if you came in here and sat at my desk every morning and read my mail and handled it. I'm going to be away until a week from Wednesday and you might as well start on this stuff!" So it was arranged that way and I gathered that he wants me to begin in earnest now learning the ropes - and no kidding about it either. In other words, this job is suddenly shaping up much faster than I expected it would. He said he had wanted me to take the other desk in his office but would prefer to wait until Henry gets out to do that. He doesn't like the idea of 4 men up at the head end - and I don't blame him. I'm not fussy about that.
