Erie, Pa.,
Monday, April 29, 1940.
It was balmy today and up to 70°, sun shining and spring very definitely in the air. We let the fire go out for the first time. "Whitey" was supposed to be in today but he wasn't - off to Cincinnati with Shapter on some job - so I continued my work handling the mail with Henry and all went smoothly. While sitting in Henry's office, I overheard "Cash" talking on the phone to someone about a plan for splitting the department up again into an "Application" group and a "Straight Commercial" group as in the old days. It was a trifle disturbing at first until I realized it would have very little effect on my new job either from a salary, title or duty standpoint. And it may not transpire at all. I think Whitey would buck it because it would mean less control of the situation for him. But even it if went through, I think we would continue to function much as we do now - with us all here at Erie together I don't see how it could be otherwise. The biggest change would be in the Organization Directory. So I shan't worry about it. If I do my work conscientiously and well, my future is bright regardless of what they do. I know that.

Babbie back to school today. This evening a went down to the creek in Frontier Place and cut a willow bough, which we planted in the back yard. A week ago, we got some barberry bushes in Laurence park and planted them hopefully in the front yard. So maybe we shall have some shrubbery eventually.
