We started our new mail collaboration program this morning and it went smoothly but perhaps because there were no tough ones in it. However, I felt I had done well with what there was and thought I understood Whitey even better than Henry. It was amazing today that people could work normally with things going on abroad but it seemed to interfere not at all so inured are we now to sensational moves over there.

I phoned Jay Walker today and he said the New Haven 44 ton job is absolutely immediate business and he thinks it can be closed in two or three weeks - hopes I can work on it. I told him I was getting very busy on other work especially war items and I am sure he didn't get the real reason. He said Phil would be "disappointed" if I didn't handle this -so Monday I'll tell Whitey the set-up and see if he's agreeable to my following this one. I would like to of course, if it's not to be dragged out. Had no word from Roy either yesterday or today although he agreed to wire me how Tom Knight made out with Frank Thursday (French was in Washington Wednesday.)

Whitey told me today that A.E. Smith may go with H.L. Andrews - is in Bridgeport now being sized up. So again Whitey is moving to shave down the Dept. so he can get in new blood. We will have something one of these days if we can get in the right men and that will be a part of my new job, I hope.

This evening I stayed at home, Lenore having left after dinner, and I listened to the radio reports on the war. We can't have any conception of what goes on! The Germans are smashing as no one ever smashed before, and things look none too good.
