allow us to quote our standard job plus a few extras called for. We came to an agreement that looked OK, with Phil promising to smooth the way with Charlie if necessary. It was about as pleasant a spot for a conference as I've seen in some time. It had cleared and we looked out across the bay to Nahant - the water was blue, the sky clean and clear, the air salty and fresh, a few boats on the bay, the long rocky shore of Nahant nosing out into the sea beyond which there was so far from this peace we have.

After our locomotive session, we three went in search of the ping pong tables and indulged in a long workout. Jay was supreme but I put up several good battles and took two out of three in one match with Phil. I had to break away ahead of the others to get back to town to catch the 8 PM train for Erie. I broke away regretfully; it was a good day with good friends - the sort of day that leaves a fresh, clean taste in one's mouth. I guess I was made for things that roll along on a level that is somehow up a little higher than the average although sometimes I am terribly tempted to "slum it" figuratively speaking. I have one recollection of this trip that leaves a happy, clean feeling - the other day at 5 PM at the office, Barbara Knowles was leaving and so were we. I had my suitcase and I grabbed it in my left hand and her arm with my right and we two romped down the hall together like a couple of happy-go-lucky kids - it is things like that - clean bright things between men and women that make life between the sexes outside the home seem normal and happy and healthy.
