.) It appears Miss Germond can never come back - probably will die. She is faithfully attempting to heal herself by Christian Science and I guess it just wont work.

.) Whitey is going to retire Beane. Off hand that seems a little tough to me but I don't know the whole story and didn't inquire.

.) Whitey is desperately searching for a man to "run" Shapter's outfit. Thought he had Hause in Washington lined up and West and Horn want to keep him. I suggested Perk - Whitey said Perk hadn't enough push and would fight like hell with Shap. Henry and I opined [[underlined]] anyone [[/underlined]] with an ounce of guts would fight with Shap. All agree Jake is too wild. Whitey wanted to trade Jake for Hause. Jake would be better in a district office job, and I think he'll land there eventually.

.) Rufus Duer is back and while [[strikethrough]] engage [[/strikethrough]] in Sch'dy got engaged to Rosella Barry, J.G's daughter. Whitey is much opposed to Rufus - personally I think he has possibilities.

This evening we went to Chautauqua to see Mom and hear the symphony. Mother looked well but complained of being very nervous, particularly because Rev. Foglesong talks unceasingly of war, taxes and catastrophe. I was a little disappointed that she wasn't more interested in my operation - I find I love to talk about it. The music was beautiful - it was a very fine evening and the Colonel seemed to enjoy it. Particularly good was "Variations on a Nursery Rhyme" by Dohnanyi for piano and orchestra.
