Erie Pa, Sunday, July 28, 1940. Went to the Peninsula this morning for another swimming and running session and afterward a picnic lunch. This afternoon to Chantangua to pick up Mother and then to Jamestown for dinner at "Gretchen's Kitchen" - a smorgasbord affair that was excellent. Mother looked well and has been but she complained of great nervousness - said she didnt see how she could go back to "that place." I may be hard hearted but somehow I feel it is not as bad as she makes out. We couldn't take her with us now- there would be no accomodations and I doubt if she would go even if there were. So I try to pass it off as well as I can. She will be back here Sept. 1st. Next summer perhaps some other arrangements will have to be made; I am beginning to recognize that. The Colonel hopped off for Louisville about 9 AM intending to drive it today. I shudder to think of his driving, especially his proclivity for going down the left side of the road, but he seems to keep in the clear somehow. He had a good time - hated to leave - but try to tradition, he left on schedule and nothing could sway him to stay even one day longer. I miss the old boy when he has left. Erie, Pa., Monday, July 29.1940. This was one of those ultra-full wild satisfying days at the office full of long - distance calls, conferences and high hopes. The B & M will probably buy four 44 tonners this week per Roy and 4 more for the Maine Central and Portland Terminal a little later. Hause is coming to Erie Sept. 1st - surprise . Fine- we need more good, young men
