Horn claimed Hause was the only man in the Washington whom he felt had sufficient promise to take over his own job eventually - and yet he is paying him only $2000 a year! Whitey said he could offer him as bright a future in our Dept. Just what he has in mind, I don't know beyond running the Industrial Loco. Section. My feeling is that we need more new young men and the better they are the better off we are. I'm not afraid of competition - I've only just begun to show what I can do - and if a better man comes along, more power to him! but he's going to have to be good to stop me!

Today's big event was the sale of 4 - 44 ton Caterpillars to the B&M! At last we reap the fruits of a year and a half of toil! We hope to get 4 more soon for Portland Terminal and Maine Central. Whitey was crabbing a little because he had to cut the price about $600 per unit. I think he made a mistake in ever cutting from $35000 to $32,500. But he was pretty pleased, particularly as we learned today we are getting 60 trolley coaches for Honolulu.

Wolf here today to wash up some odds and ends on the Central. The trouble at Auburn was vibration due to the generator hold-down bolts being loose but there are other troubles - oil leakage from the engine bearing into the generator and a noisy generator bearing - a gang goes up this weekend to fix it. There is nothing inherently wrong and I am hoping for 3 to 5 more this fall. Everyone is tickled with its performance.
