him look like a hindu fortune teller.  Under the influence of two stiff Tom Collins, he and I did a [[underlined]] solo [[/underlined]] dance for the assembled crowd.  We didn't win any prizes but Bab and Rog in costumes entirely improvised by themselves were given a prize which thrilled Rog particularly beyond words.  They make a good looking pair anyhow and seem to come in for a lot of attention - but Bab continues to play a lone hand and won't associate with anyone her own age.  There aren't any boys here Rog's age but he seems to enjoy himself and he and Bab are together a lot.  Then we do quite a bit with them and every afternoon they spend a couple of hours in the water.  So I think they are having a good time.

Saturday, Aug. 10, 1940.
Commodore Taft and I went out and shot 9 holes of golf this morning - our first of the season.  I stepped up on the first tee before a crowd and laid my first drive 200 yds. down the center of the fairway to my surprise, satisfaction and extreme pleasure.  Wound up with a 55 which I though pretty good under the circumstances.  A couple of congenial Tom Collins afterward put the finishing touches on a nice morning.
This afternoon the Commodore and I visited Vergennes for some shopping  and found where we could get some horseshoes but didn't take time to get them.  We did get time for a couple of ales at the 153 year old tavern and a conversation with a young, handsome, well spoken officer en route to the army maneuvers at Potsdam where Roy Goggins now is.  I admire the Commodore his ability to get acquainted
