This was a dreary, cold, rainy autumnlike day and we stayed indoors until late afternoon when we drove up to Chautauqua and brought Mother home. I know she is happy to be back and it is nice to have her. She is changed I feel sure. She seems happier with us lately and things go much smoother. I like to think back to my boyhood with Mother - all the sacrifices she made for me even to directly taking a hand in having me accept the G.E. job much as she must have hated to have me leave her. I certainly do owe her a lot and I hope in the few remaining years she has, I can make up for some of my selfishness of the last decade with her.

I must admit I had a slight feeling of dread when I went to the office this morning on account of Whitey's showdown with Shapter but Shap wasn't back from his vacation and I guess he has another week. Whitey didn't say anything and neither did I. I noticed from the mail this morning that Jack Hume wants to pass on Jack Hause before he is given the Industrial Loco. Section so it seems likely he will want to pass on me. However, I don't imagine he will have any objections.

This was a rather low pressure day cleaning up odds and ends but the tempo accelerated toward the end of the day when Whitey and Chet Lang gave me some orders on the 75mm howitzer program. The invitation calls for lots of 250 to 500, 500 to 750 and 750 up, all to be produced in 534 days. Everyone was all steamed up over our getting 750 of them
