Neil advised he had been to see Putnam at Montpelier and "Put" has repaired his Montpelier-Barre switches so he can't see buying a locomotive for that job for another year. On the St. Johnsbury switches, he has run into the thing I feared when we first approached that job - the savings must be split among the St.J & L.C., the Canadian Pacific and the Maine Central while "Put" puts up all the money - so that job is bogged down too. I'm going to give that situation some thought. At the time, I brought the point up with "Put" and he dismissed it as irrelevant. Something is wrong in Boston - this job makes three flops to steam - Moshassuck Valley, Chapman Valve, and now Montpelier & Wells River.

Henry Guy has been away since last Tuesday and I have wondered if I would be called on to do any pinch hitting for him. Sure enough today my turbine expert called on Chatanooga Traction where Jake is trying to sell a 44 ton Caterpillar job and I had to rustle around for a while - no more breaking out our equipment prices from our complete locomotive. I was pleased to find I satisfied him very well. Was glad the first call was not too difficult and went smoothly - the next time will be easier.

Bought Willie a new GE mixer today as a surprise and she was delighted. But after a few starts it suddenly went dead completely. Moreover the juicer bowl was wobbly and so, as usual with most of my GE. purchases, I have to take it back tomorrow for replacements! Sometimes I wonder if they pass off second rate stuff on the Employees Stores.

Mother seems well contented and it is so nice to have her here with us again.
