Had a nice talk with Walt Scarborough today - went over and spoke to him at lunch as it was the first time I'd seen him back since his operation. Later he dropped into the office for a chat - is living at the Ford but after things are "settled" will probably take an apartment - weighs 151 stripped or little more than I do but says he feels fine - has joined the Erie Club and the "Y" - is playing golf - apparently he is trying to organize a bachelor's life. Also he seems to be much changed - not as pugnacious, more anxious to be friendly - tamed down considerably. Charlie Reed says Walt is doing everything now to get back into the Reserve Corps also. The gossip about Maybelle is that she has an apartment - is nervous as a witch and the probably reason is that she [[strikethrough]] k [[/strikethrough]] now fears the banker won't marry her, leaving her high and dry. She had a tough time getting evidence in the divorce case - no one wanted to be a witness against Walter and finally they had to doctor up some. Walter didn't contest the thing because if he had all this scandal would have come out about her - I think he has been pretty white about it. Willie says Maybelle goes to see the rest of our crowd but never comes here because she knows I have no sympathy for her.

Speaking of ex-hospitalees, Gus Marx is now back again, looking well and happy to be on the job. Tonight I wrote a letter to poor Bob Walsh in answer to his of early June. While his letter was highly optimistic, A.J. Woodward discounted it because it is a characteristic of TB that they are most optimistic when they are in a temporary good spell. Hope Bob comes back but it looks rather bad.
