on the basis of the contract being signed this week and they were afraid all the commitments would lapse and they would be high and dry except for Gov't. priority which Don claims carries little more weight than the G.E. Monogram. So Emmet tried to get Clark in Sch'dy., then in Washington and finally talked to Blair, who told him the job [[underlined]] could [[/underlined]] be consummated in 24 hours and he thought would be in a few days. I am still at a loss to understand why Blair and Clark were at such complete variance. It made me feel rather silly because Emmet had just had a talk with "Charley" Wilson about the job and was on the point of calling him back to protest this delay - fortunately he checked up first or it might have been even more embarassing. But regarding "Charley"; Emmet told him he wasn't happy about the job and the President gave him an opinion on it that was strikingly parallel to mine. He was satisfied if our capital structure was not impaired and we made a small profit and that is just about what this job will be. Whittier spent a large part of the day trailing down the elevating arc and pinion situation on the long distance phone and wound up by finding the contract was OK and all that was left was Tom Mulvey's dissatisfaction at having to try to get them again - he was afraid they had been deducted from our cost but Gonger at Sch'dy. assured him they had not so breathed a sigh or relief- he was getting rather tough with me at one time until I reminded him I was [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] in Washington last week with St. L. and didn't understand the thing any better than he did. Then he backed off considerably. Mulvey is in Schdy. and I hope he sees Clark on it.
