get the 5/38 contract, he recommended we go ahead on machine tools just as though we had it. I told Emmet that but he wanted Clark to get Burroughs to either write him or phone him and authorize that he go ahead, and I didn't blame him. So I called Cliff and he agreed to talk to Cunningham. Later he phoned back to say Burroughs would [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] authorize any tool purchases until we have an order. So if Clark is correct about the 3 weeks, it simply adds more delay and complication. Another thing to argue out next week when St.L. gets back.

We had a meeting in Emmet's office this morning on the 75 mm howitzer job and I got it off to Thorpe this afternoon with a whole lot of "ifs" and "buts" but it was the best we could do. "Whitey" is afraid we may get 750 of them rammed down our throats whether we like it or not although we bid on only 250 beyond which we have to eat seriously into our productive capacity in Bldg. 6 for our regular business. Thorpe had been unable yet to get us release on the $54,000 but has hopes - otherwise it goes into the new bid. Somehow, I'm afraid there are going to be repercussions on this - it will be interesting to watch.

Rudy is on vacation this week and next. Doc Gillilan will be away most of next week. So I fail to see how I can take over in Shap's place next week, particularly with the tank meeting Tuesday, Bloss here Wednesday, Maj. Reedal, who took Blackmore's job, maybe here sometime too, and the 5/38 still unsettled. Well, we shall see.

Played more croquet tonight with Rog and we winning two more games, the last played largely by flashlight!
