as possible. For some reason Bert seems to have taken a great fancy to me. Bert is an up-from-the-ranks man, having started railroading at 15 - he is a good dresser, a good mixer, good looking, a good sport and very ambitious. I sometimes think he may see in me what he lacks and wants - a social background, polish, education, culture, an ability to talk well. Well, I can say truthfully I like Bert - I think he has a lot on the ball and is a genuine person. I like people like that. Gerry thinks Bert is the fellow that Kirtley has worked on to put across some of his loco deals - it may be true but somehow I think Bert is too smart to take a chance of wrecking his career on anything like that. Strangely George Kirtley was not present today, and Bert never mentioned him. Pulled into the Hotel Cleveland at 1:40AM feeling not drunk but somewhat washed out after a pretty strenuous 10 hours. I lay in the shower for a while to revive and then went to bed - think I must have gone to sleep within 30 seconds of hitting the pillow. Erie, Pa., Sunday, Sept. 8, '40. Had a call at 7AM thinking the train left at 7:45 but was too tired to hop up and finally decided to take the next train which I was sure left about 9AM. Got up at 8 and was downstairs at 8:30 only to learn I had just missed the train and I'd have to wait until 12:30PM for the next. I considered flying back but gave that up on account of worrying mother in view of the recent crash.
