So I phoned Willie I'd be home at 2:35 PM, had a heavy breakfast and went for a walk along the waterfront and out on the public steamboat landings that took me until noon and gave me a chance to do some thinking. I decided I've been playing rather a shipshod game lately and now is the time to correct it and make good. Before me lies my opportunity to take a definite step toward becoming a big man in the Company. I owe it to Bab and Rog not to muff this chance - to them I owe it most of all. It means playing a more careful game - one in which I put all I have and am into an effort at living as never before in my business and my personal life. Today, I want to start that game - a game played to the rules I have long known.

Was glad to get home after a rough, noisy dirty day coach ride that nearly shook me to pieces in an old, non-air conditioned car the N.Y.C. should be ashamed of. Spent the rest of the day peacefully at home. Willie was certainly delighted with the coffeemaker too - it was almost too much, following so soon on the heels of the mixer.

Rog started Sunday School today at Covenent, going with Nicki Greer, with whom he has had no relations all summer because Nicki's language became very bad. He has now reformed according to reports and he and Rog are very thick again while there is a rift between Rog and Boyd Burt. The devil roaming through all this picture is said to be Douglas Graham, the DA's son. He taught Nicki to swear and estranged Boyd.
