in getting started seems criminal.  God grant we don't get caught like France did all because we can't clear the red tape and the politics out of our eyes and get going in time.  The Nazis are letting London have all they've got - 600 civilians killed in the last two days and the Germans apparently trying now to terrorize the population.  It must be a veritable hell but the British are taking it somehow.  I've just about concluded all we have should be thrown against those mad dogs - the sooner they are wiped off the face of the earth the better for civilization and civilized people.

We were the [[underlined]] only [[/underlined]] bidder today on the 75mm howitzer circular.  I was amazed, thinking National Forge & Ordnance would be in there like a bunch of vultures ready to pounce on their prey.  We took exception to the stiff penalty clause of 1/5% per day and 20% maximum, so it has been referred to Washington.  In the meantime Bethlehem Steel says we must place our forging orders by Friday or they withdraw - always pressure from somewhere!

The New York Central locomotive still here - now awaiting some new engine parts from Cummins.  I am just waiting for Bill Hamilton to come in here with fire in his eye some day this week and I wouldn't blame him - it is getting terrible.  And A.J.W's retort - hard to answer - is that his men are working every day and night and he's getting sick of it.

Tom Perkinson is talking of building a house if he can find out what to use for money.  My feeling is this:  If and when I definitely get Henry's job and another substantial raise, I might consider a house.  Right now I'm wondering if I can see my way clear to buy a new car next spring!
