good thing to get it out into the open although Roy assured me it will never go to Washington. However, I shouldn't be surprised at a repercussion on this.

.) Bill Hearsmann phoned from Philadelphia to say that arrangements he and I were making for Guy Sturges to go to Frankfort Arsenal on the 5/38 sighting mechanism tooling, were on the rocks. Garnaud, the Navy Inspector wrote Commander Hill at Sch'dy. and he wrote the Arsenal okaying Sturges. Bill now says the Arsenal can't take any okay from Comm. Hill but must have it from the Chief of Ordnance and have communicated with Gen'l Wesson for his okay on Hill's okay and so far haven't got it! In the meantime, Guy is tearing his hair!

.) The two 44 ton Caterpillar locos for the Gt. Northern got as far as No. Springfield, Pa. and burned out a bunch of intermediate shaft bearings on the GE 733 motor and are back in the shop. This won't help my big boost for the GE 733 with Bill Hamilton.

.) The Defense Coordinating Committee wouldn't accept the Navy's "letter of intent" as sufficient to justify ordering machine tools for the 5"/38 and we are stymied with the situation getting more serious daily!

.) A minor point but an annoying one was getting caught in the middle between Bird Hawk and Tracy Delahooke on generator covers on the New York Central - Bird said they were lousy and Del said they were okay if the Locomotive Dept hadn't put an exhaust pipe right over them which prevented putting them on right. Each was appealing to me on the phone for help in making the other one fix it!
