Whitey said, "I'm still the boss around here - at least I think I am." But the impression I got was that this hadn't worked out as Whitey expected it to and Shap was in open rebellion - and Whitey himself was considerably worried as to the outcome.

I thought the thing over and the more I thought, the more I became convinced we are dealing with as nearly an impossible situation as there can be of this sort. Finally I went in and had an "off the record" talk with Cash about it. He said he had never felt it was a wise move but Whitey has his own ideas and they aren't to be swayed very much. He felt it wasn't fair to me and perhaps not to Shap. He said in his opinion there were two ways to handle it - either put up with Shap as boss in there or get rid of him altogether either by transfer or retirement - that he was between 55 and 60. Cash didn't have anything very constructive to offer but it was a relief to me to talk about it with someone anyway.

2.) Horn informed us we had lost the tank drive job to mechanical syncromesh on account of weight. When Gouldy heard it he provoked me somewhat by saying the job should have been "sold" more, it wouldn't sell itself - and also that if it was mechanical transmission he thought someone ought to protest to the U.S. Gov't. because the National Defense Program was being jeopardized! I've always like Gouldy but I didn't care for his attitude about this.

3.) The New York Central continued a mystery and the generator went back to Bldg. 6 for a thorough check-up. Bill Hamilton phoned me from Dayton and I advised him not to stop here tomorrow. Fortunately he seemed calm about it all.
