hour, Dusky passed a tape worm out of him about four feet long! No wonder he has been hungry and wild sometimes. Following this, we gave him a bath with flea soap - his first - and he was remarkably good about it. In spite of it however, he is still scratching! And so am I just thinking about the whole affair.

This was sort of a depressing day to me after last night's hilarity - the usual let-down coupled with circumstances. We played croquet and Rog and I made great progress on the airplane model. I have been thinking of Shapter and wondering if he will make some sort of a scene at the office tomorrow. It wouldn't surprise me to find he had written a letter to C.E. Wilson about it. Well, I have no reason to have a guilty conscience in the matter and my best course is to go along normally and have faith the thing will straighten itself out.

Monday, Sept. 23, 1940.

Unlike Thursday and Friday, today was mostly one of high spots to my relief and pleasure:

1.) Shapter came back to work and several times I saw him smiling at various people so concluded he may have seen the light over the weekend and decided to be better about the whole affair. According to Rudy, Shap informed several people today that he had his "walking papers" and had been eased out as section head, another indication he is now resigned to the inevitable. All this is not ultra encouraging but it could be worse so I put it down on the credit side of the ledger anyhow.
