bound flight came in and took off with some of Bill Collin's Boston Store cohorts going to N.Y. for some buying. Bill is going down on the train tonight and hoped I would be down this week - he and I have been trying to connect somewhere for a long time. I imagine it would be quite a celebration if we ever did; I'd like to see Bill in action out of town and away from Harriet. The westbound flight circled twice around the field and then headed for Cleveland without landing - the wind was wrong on the short runways. About half a million has been appropriated to fix up this field 100% presumably for military reasons as well as commercial.

When we got home there was croquet and then Bab and Rog engaged in a "puzzle race", each of them taking a puzzle and trying to finish it before the other. Rog is reputed to be such an expert he can do a puzzle with pieces all turned blank side up.

Jack Benny's program started again tonight and also the regular Ford Hour with Richard Crooks, so autumn is indeed here at last.

Going to work this morning, Basil Cain said, "Well, I spent all day Saturday enjoying the usual weekend sport - shooting vibration trouble on the New York Central locomotive." It developed that when they got her up to speed Saturday on the break-in run, they found the vibration worse than ever! Cain had been unable to find any cause so this morning they brought her back to Bldg. 10 [[underline]] again [[/underline]] to tear the engine generator set down and check everything. That took all day and they found the flywheel perfect - after people had damned Zeke Tinkey for putting it on without checking it. "Gouldy" was one who was most critical of Zeke on this point.
