Jay had a few interesting comments on business.

1) Bill Hamilton questioned me at some length in North Tonawanda as to how much of the Goose Island job I thought a 44 tonner would do - I told him about 90% and the other 10% up the "mountain" and over the drawbridges, it wouldnt do. But I wondered why his sudden interest since he has evinced very little if any before. Jay gave me the answer: G-M has been after Starbuck to let them put a 44 ton demonstrator on the Central - if they do, it will be over Bill's dead body, I think. And from now on, as far as the Central goes, I am a booster for the 70 ton size, which G-M doesnt have.

2.) Jay says Shapter is on the way out evidently doesn't know my part in it and I didnt tell him. Whitey still sits on the fence.

3.) MacDonald of Cummins of New York is now an agent for Davenport Locomotive Works and is still trying to get us to play ball with him too! He is trying to insist complete set of New York Central mechanical drawings for 70 ton go through him to the Central; his only purpose could be to have them photostated and hand to Davenport. I never took to the gentleman. I think we should cut loose from him. Through him, our prices are Davenport's now.

After dinner, we went up to Jay's apartment too. said hello to Virginia, played a few records, and Jay put. me on the New Haven at Pellam. Very little mention was made of Jay's "girl friend" this time. As I boarded my train at Grand Central, 0362 pulled in with a New Haven job, filling me with memories of 1938.
