presume he's going to get somebody's okay before he broadcasts it. I shan't believe this is consummated until I see it done finally and conclusively. Whitey has certainly put off and put off. I shouldn't be surprised if he let it fall through even yet. But I gained a point today - it is nearer consummation than it has been I think.

7.) Federal & Marine Dept. need more men to handle the rising flood of Gov't business. Possibilities: Shorty Miles - Walt Scarborough - Bearce. Whitey is revamping our departmental personnel and seems to be getting somewhere.

8.) The eminently unsatisfactory spot of today was the election. Willie, Mother and I went to the Reeds for a "Republican rally" this evening. Maybelle was there, thinner. Dick and Marion Lamborn and Barbara's Mother were there too. Almost from the start the trend seemed to be toward "the Third Term Candidate," as Mr. Willkie has always referred to Roosevelt as throughout the campaign. However, we consoled ourselves that it was too early to predict anything. But the trend continued and we became sadder and sadder. Sweet cider and doughnuts failed to buck us up. By 11 PM a Roosevelt victory seemed assured. Republican papers began to concede the victory and so did we. Willkie was the only one who refused to give up. To add to the Craton Troubles, Willie developed a sore toe during the evening, that got worse so rapidly we went home early so she could soak it in hot water and epsom salts which seemed to help. I took a taxi to catch the 1:33AM for Boston, went to sleep soon in a deluxe sleeper, "Poplar Camp," in spite of the election.
