as he didn't know the competitor's price, that didn't mean very much. Out come of these two jobs will be interesting.

.) Resolved today to play ball 100% with Shap - no fun poking or anything of the sort behind his back - only praise. loyalty, defense. It's the only way and I owe it to him. So far he has played the game pretty well.

.) Whitey, Rudy & I had lunch together and at it Whitey replaced Rudy with me on the Loco. Management Committee as of Jan. 1.

.) At the same luncheon, Whitey made some remarks indicating he is considering keeping me on my new job longer than the year he told me about when he proposed the job. I was inclined to be disturbed about this thinking perhaps he is changing his mind about Henry's successor. However, I was happy to wind up with a sensible attitude about it. In the first place, Whitey, with a thousand things on his mind, may have forgotten the one year promise. In the second place, this is sensible too: When the time comes for Henry to retire, his successor will be picked as the best man available from those eligible - it must be this way, regardless of past promises. I am glad to take my chances with the rest and my chances are now far better as a section head than they were before. My job now is to make a success of this present job. The future will care for itself.

.) Commander Hill here today. It is his last trip as he is to assume shortly his new job of Chief Gunnery Officer on the U.S.S. South Carolina one of the new 30,000 ton battleships now abuilding. He is a gunnery expert - and it takes one too.
