got them so tame they would eat from his hand & now they are a nuisance. He had no idea what kind of bird they were & they are the first seen in the valley. Magpies are common at Blanco, but only a few were seen up the Blanco canyon, one near our camp.

There are no farms & no one living along the lower part of Blanco canyon. A few old Navajo hogans are vacant but a few herds of goats & sheep range in the canyon & 2 Indian girls were with one herd. A few horses and cattle were seen but grass is poor & scarce & water scarce & bad. There seems to be no chance for irrigation & probably not rainfall enough for water storage. The soil is mostly very sandy & the cliffs are all of sandstone except occasional strips or strata of badland clays. Fossil wood is abundant.
