[[underlined]] Pueblo Bonito to 7 Lakes & beyond [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] Oct. 24. [[/underlined]] Left the old pueblo and followed up the south side of canyon about 3 miles to La Majara Butte & out through the gap onto open plains to the [[strikethrough]] east [[/strikethrough]]south, across several dry lake beds and on over grassy ridges and valleys, with the great south wall of the Chaco Mesa behind us to the N.E. About 20 miles out we crossed a low ridge that runs out from the Chaco Mesa and carries scattered junipers and nut pines across the plains to the S.W. Picked up a porcupine on this ridge and found trees gnawed by them. The one found was out where only cactus & grass were to be seen however and its stomach contained mainly grass. For miles the ridges are almost carpeted with a small opuntia with long, fine white spines and dry fruit.

After crossing the Juniper ridge we went down grade and came to the store at Seven Lakes. There are dry flats but no water & the water in a deep well is very bad.
