and probably there are extensive caves which I did not find. There are numerous caves big enough to camp in comfortably Dr. Grover has heard a rumor of a cave in the Zuni Mts. full of Elk bones, but doesnt know where it is.
   
The soil of the valley is excellent if good water could be had for irrigation but the spring is very alkaline and ruins the soil Still fair crops are raised of alfalfa and corn & vegetables. There are quite a lot of apple trees, but from neglect or some other reason they seem not to bear well. Several years ago they are said to have had a good crop of apples. The orchards are weedy & neglected but the trees look healthy & vigorous.
   
Stock raising is the principal industry of the valley and wild hay seems to be the principal crop. Many are busy pressing and hauling hay to ship away, while numerous cattle & horses range on the meadows for winter. The surrounding mesa and foothill country affords good grazing.
