 2 [[/overwritten]] [[/underlined]] Came over to Grants to catch the night train for Thoreau. Left Grants at 1 AM & reached Thoreau about 2 AM & went to hotel. A cold night.

[[underlined]] Nov. 2 [[overwritten]] 3 [[/overwritten]] [[/underlined]] Took the log train at about 9 AM for Kettner & arrived at 10:30, Climbed the nearest mountain before dinner and then went with log train over the divide and down onto head of Bluewater R. for a load of logs, returning to Kentner by moon light on engine with 22 loads of logs behind me. Had about 2 hours to tramp over mts. and get notes and make maps. Wrote up physiography in evening.
    
Found snow a foot deep on steep north slopes but warm slopes are bare and dry and grass is still in good condition and abundant. There are many delightful camp places in yellow pine or spruce forests or open grassy parks and meadows or in groves of aspens that would be pleasant in summer. Water is abundant and good in small streams & springs, & there are cold wet gulches where microtus &
