[[underlined]] Nov. 7 [[/underlined]] - Took early morning train to Mesilla Park. Did not stop at the Selden dam as the big Govt. ditch there is only 6 miles long and is a merely a deep canal through the flats. with no high banks to be injured by barrows.

Cold and frosty in morning at Engle when I had to wait from 5:20 to 7 AM for late train. Icicles hung on water tank, but it soon warmed up after sunrise.

[[underlined]] Nov. 8. [[/underlined]] Sunday - Tramped down below old Mesilla to sand dunes along Rio Grande. Photographed ditches and gopher hills in ditch banks.

In many places the old ditches have been built up, the sediment from the bottom piled on the banks, then the bottom filled up year after year until now the bed of the ditch often stands 2 to 6 feet above the field & the
banks often 6 to 8 and sometimes 10 or 12 feet high. [[image: sketch in profile of the banks and ditch]] The gophers readily tunnel under the ditch from one side to the other.
